Five things more dangerous than TERRORISTS

America is spending $768 billion this year and this goes up each year on the military to fight terrorists.   

The total number of Americans killed since 911 = ZERO.  The total number of Americans hurt = ZERO.  I know American TROOPS are being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, but they wouldn’t be if they weren’t there.  Bring them home.

If we do a little math we can compare your chances of being killed by a terrorist with other risks you face.

1. Auto Accidents:

The number of Americans killed each year in auto accidents averages 27,000 or about 2,200 per month, every month.  Fully 40% of these involved drug drivers, or about 10,000 deaths per year. 

A quick check shows deaths by terrorist over 9 years 4,300 = 478; deaths by drunk drivers each year 10,000 = 20 times more likely to be killed by a drunk driver then a terrorist.

1. HAND Gun MURDERS:

America leads the world in hand gun deaths – we get the GOLD metal every year in this Olympic event.  Most of the deaths by hand gun are accidents – six year old kills four year old with dads 357.  Murder deaths each year in America are around 13,000 by hand gun.  Yes we win again.  We are world leaders in murder by hand gun.  Even in places with little or no police protections we Americans kill more people with our hand guns.  A quick check 478 deaths by terrorist attack each year on average (none for 9 years) and 13,000 murders by hand gun = 27 times more likely to be murdered by a hand gun than by a terrorist.

1. GUN accidents:

This is a different area completely – one is murder and this is accident.  Most people will never be murdered, we are way too nice for anyone to want to murder us, but accidents do happen even to nice people.  Over 36,000 people are killed each year by guns.  If we take those murdered by hand gun from this number we have about 26,000 killed by ACCIDENT by guns.  Yes we win again, no one in the entire world tops America in total gun deaths.  A quick check shows you are = 54 times more likely to be accidently killed by a gun than by a terrorist.

1. Fatal Occupational Accidents:

This group includes construction, mining, manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, fishing, etc., and the average is about 5,700 per year.  Quick check here = you are 11 times more likely to be killed in an occupational accident than by a terrorists.

1. Fatal Hospital Mistake Deaths:

There are over 100,000 deaths each year from hospital mistakes, wrong medication and mismanaged care.  A quick check shows you are = 209 times more likely to be killed by a hospital than by a terrorist.    

I didn’t include all the deaths by various illnesses like cancer, heart failure, etc.  Of course you are much more likely to be killed by one of these than by a terrorist. 

The real reason to review the facts is so we don’t get caught up in all the fear mongering being done by right-wing nut-jobs, Republicans and Obama and start to believe we are at risk of being killed by Al Qaeda terrorists.  It simply isn’t true.  The real number we should all look at is this calculation of your risk of death by terrorist over 9 years = 4,300 (killed in 911)/300,000,000 (Americans)/ 9 years = that is your risk of being killed by a terrorist.  If you worry about this you are probably at Tea Bagger and you need to seek professional help.  You are by definition CRAZY.
