Hank or Barry?

It appears to all reasonable people who are the least bit objective that Barry Bonds took steroids and that these steroids helped him break the all time home run record of Hank Aaron.

Hank Aaron played for 22 years, from 1954 to 1976.

He had a life time batting average of .305, hit 755 home runs and had 2297 RBIs.  He was a gentlemen and a sportsman.

Barry Bonds played for 21 years from 1986 to 2007.

He had a life time batting average of .298, hit 762 home runs and had 1996 RBIs.  He played for 21 years from 1986 to 2007.

Both players are great athletes and both belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame.  But one player cheated and stole a very important record; the most home runs EVER by a player.

The question I have is, could Hank have hit another 7 or 8, if he too had taken drugs that increased his ability to hit a ball a long way?  I can remember seeing Hank hit a long fly ball out just in front of the right field fence.  Would that ball have carried another 10 feet and been a homer if Hank is on drugs?  Would some of the hundreds of long fly ball outs have been homers if Hank had cheated?

I think it is a shame on baseball that we are asking this question.  Baseball knew for years that players were taking performance enhancement drugs and that these drugs were impacting hitting.  In fact, some players were hitting the baseball a mile who hadn’t hit it an inch before the drugs.

Make no mistake that Barry Bonds is a great player, but he is a lousy human being.  Yes you heard me correctly.

My grandfather and every coach I ever had in high school and college told me that cheating was wrong.  In fact they said, “Cheaters never prosper.”

They were wrong.  So was baseball, the owners and the players who cheated.  I know that steroids were legal, but they weren’t honest.  There is a difference.  We teach our children not to cheat even if they can.  It is dishonest.

Finally, the worst thing for me is Bonds refuses to tell us the truth.  He continues to lie about this issue.  Many of the players who took steroids have admitted they took them and apologized.  I have a great deal of respect for these players.  They knew they were cheating and when they got caught they had the guts and the integrity to tell the truth.

Now forever and ever Barry Bonds, LIAR and CHEATER will be considered the all time home run champion.  There needs to be a note telling everyone who visits the Hall of Fame that the real best of all time is Hank Aaron.  He didn’t cheat and he didn’t lie.

What say you?

JW,

Me too. I wish I could like Barry, but he needs to come clean first.

Thanks for reading and for your comments...

Wish you could read the hub I wrote this weekend comparing the two careers in light of Bond's sentencing on Friday. It was full of stats, but got pulled for duplicate content. I don't understand how HP expects you to write about sports without pulling stats from already published sources? If they republish it, you'll probably find it interesting.
