Understanding Sara Palin & why people LOVE her
As a student of life with a lot of time on my hands I have tried to understand why people like people I don’t care for.
In fact many of my friends like Sara Palin. Some actually voted for McCain/Plain because she was on the ticket. They couldn’t stand McCain but voted for him anyway because of Sara, said one friend of mine.
I read many things Sara said about a lot of issues. I watched video and marveled at what appears to be her lack of depth and her lack of understanding and yet many love her.
In trying to figure out this attraction I think I have found a few clues.
1. Sara is genuine – no doubt about this, what you see is who she is
2. Sara is not mean – in general I can’t see her intentionally being mean to anyone
3. Sara is like many people who have lived their entire lives in small towns and out of the way places somewhat shielded from the realities of big cities
4. Sara is a kind of elitist, one of those people who are not from famous places, or famous universities, and not from NYC, LA or a city
5. Sara has simple answers to all the complex questions that make sense to real down home country people
6. Sara is a mom and loves what mom’s love, children, homemade pie, shooting animals, etc
7. Sara looks great and smiles a lot even when others don’t smile
8. Sara isn’t too interested in the world outside her beloved Alaska, fishing and hunting and “taking back America”
9. Sara believes in the US Constitution even if she hasn’t ever read it, most people haven’t
10. Sara believes in good old self reliance (well she does get a federal government check every year like all Alaskans) and knows all government is bad
The most revealing thing Sara ever said is the following:
"We believe that the best of America is not all in Washington, D.C. ... We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation." --Sarah Palin, Greensoboro, N.C., Oct. 16, 2008
The fact is most Americans don’t live in Sara’s real America they live in cities and suburbs of big cities. The “small towns” Sara is talking about are mostly white, mostly uneducated and mostly unaware of other non-white Americans.
To understand Sara and her followers you must understand where she came from and her life experiences. She has never lived in a city. I have been to Alaska many times and they don’t have a real city, including Anchorage and Fairbanks.
She attended small rural colleges; mostly all white and she doesn’t really know anyone who isn’t white.
Does any of this make her a bad person? Nope. Does it help her understand the major issues facing America? Nope. Is it what attracts many people to her and makes many love her? Yep.
There is a large and growing group, maybe 18% of Americans as the surveys show, that don’t like the “real” America of big cities, multi-cultures and the educated elite. To these people when they say they “want their country back” they mean no big cities and no multi-cultures – just small all white towns.
Alas it can’t ever happen – the real America is not going away.
Is Sara going to see the real America now that she travels? Nope. What she sees is something she hates with a passion; New York City, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Newark, Atlanta, and the other 100 biggest cities and there surrounding areas of congestion, many races living next to each other and going to the same schools, crime, politics, change, uncertainty, growth and a very different America than the one she loves.
If you have any compassion you have to feel sorry for Sara and those who long for their “real America” because it no longer exists and can never exist again.

This attempt to make Sarah Palin out as ignorant is out of the playbook of the Democrats and it's an old play. For the Dems, all the Republicans they don't like are morons: Reagan, Dan Quayle (with an "e"!), George W. Bush, and now Sarah Palin. I still remember liberals railing on Reagan, relentlessly as the "amiable dunce." Whatever may be the mental status of Sarah Palin, she's leaving Pelosi, Gibbs, Reid, Rangel, Gore, and Biden in the intellectual dust. Gore use to make all kinds of stupid, ignorant remarks and we were almost ignorant enough to elect him.
People love Sarah Palin b/c she shares the basic values of the American people: she loves her heritage, she's proud of where she comes from, she's saavy, she's proud to stand up for her country, and she's tough (just for starters).
Sarah Palin says alot of stupid things , true. I am pretty conservative and I would not want her for my President , true. Why do the Libs fear someone who does not even hold a political office , and attack her so viciously ? Because whether they like it or not people except for the left really like her, true. And she posesses a quality that politicians on both sides of the aisle do not have ,and you alluded to it already , SHE IS NOT A PHONY ! How are all those Ivy League educated world class orators on both sides of the aisle working out for us say over the last 40 years ? They are all carpetbaggers !

I didn't say she was stupid and I don't think she is stupid. She has a limited education and life view. Nothing wrong with that.
As for values - well mine are those of JC "love your neighbor - help the poor, etc" and I don't see them in her or Republicans.

It wasn't an attack - it was an explanation of how she came to think as she does. I said she was not a phony and neighter is Limbaugh, McCain, DeMint, Chaney, Bush and the other right-wingers. They are very honest about not wanting 30 million Americans to have healthcare including 8 million children.

If that's the case, then you must live in a smaller neighborhood than Palin, because the research demonstrates that Republicans are more charitable in their private lives than are Democrats. Many Democrats are good at talking about charity, which to them is giving away other people's money. Republicans are better at giving out of their own pocket. Their generosity is, by far, greater.
BTW, I hope you are as hard on Obama and the rationing of health care (which has already begun) than you are on those mean Republicans that didn't want children to have health care.

I'm for universal healthcare - we are the only western democracy (36 in total) without it. JC would vote for it and anyone who reads what he said knows this is true. Republicans are PROFIT - they want profit from the sick, suffering and dying.

There are extreme groups on both the right and left of the political spectrum that are detached from reality. They don’t care about facts.
It has become “them against us” and the facts don’t matter. Too bad, but as my grandfather once said, “it is what it is.”
I have some sympathy toward Sara because she is so limited in her view of America and all its complexity; big cities, small towns, many races and cultures, big corporations, small business and yes needed government services that make life better for everyone.

JCR - I have to argue the point of her not being educated. She attended 5 colleges over 5 years before she received a BS in Communications with a specialization in Journalism.
She's worked her whole life to be on TV, which is perhaps why she's pretty good at it. She is a media driven cult of personality, nothing more. So was Reagan, the movie star turned politician, he and she bring an extreme comfortablity in front of the camera that most politicians just don't have. I don't think she's going to run for Pres, it would cut down on her on-screen time.

All true as usual. My point was she has never really lived in a big city or been around many different cultures so she has little knowledge about this area of America. This doesn't mean she is bad. Just has little or no knowledge here.
I too think she has become an icon, she doesn't really want to manage anything. Being governor was a drag for her so she quit.

Sara Palin is uneducated and proud of it. She believes she is superior because she writes a cheat sheet on her hand. Some people buy it. She is savvy enough to have amassed millions of $$ since her meteoric rise to fame ; yet did not complete her term as governor. Sarah likes to appear down home but is anything but. She is one experienced business person. Good hub!
