Taxpayers will pay BILLIONS to clean up BP spill

The BP oil spill is now leaking 210,000 barrels a day into the Gulf.  It is poisoning the ocean and will soon hit miles of beach, nature preserves, marshes and rivers.

The total cost to clean up the BP oil spill will exceed $8 billion according to many estimates. 

BP will only have to pay $75 million of the BILLIONS it will cost to clear up the oil spill.

Republicans pushed through a law limiting the liability of oil companies when they damage the environment to just $75 million.  This was a response to the $4 billion Exxon had to pay for the Alaska oil spill. 

The Tea Baggers are all for this kind of hands off policy from the federal government.  It is just another form of socialist regulation.  No more rules that hamper capitalism they shout.  No more government interference with free enterprise.  In fact, many Tea Party members blame the spill on the federal government.  If government just let BP do what they do best, get the oil, nothing would have happened.   Why should Washington DC bureaucrats tell oil executives what they have to do?     

We don’t know for sure how bad the damage will be, but it will certainly have major environmental and economic impact in the Gulf area.

Thousands of those damaged in the Alaska spill never got a dime even throw they won a law suit for billions.  Exxon drug out the laws suits, with endless appeals, for over ten years and many of those entitled to compensation died before the US justice system paid anything.  Many small businesses went out of business.

Expect the same here.  BP is already hiring lawyers and making plans to dispute all claims from the fishermen that can’t fish because the fishing grounds are covered in oil.  Many resort areas that rely on tourists are seeing cancelations and tens of millions more will be lost because the beaches, fishing and recreation areas will soon be covered in oil and tar.

The Tea Party says we need less regulation and they will repeal all government regulations for oil drilling when they take power.  They have already said they will get rid of the FDA (we don’t need the government telling people what they can and can’t eat or how safe medications should be), EPA (who cares if the air and water are clean), FCC (let one company control all media FOX), FAA (let the airlines run the air space) and other federal government bureaucrats that increase the costs business pays to comply with needless regulation.  “Get government off our backs,” is their motto and they intend to get rid of these crazy laws that tell people and corporations what to do.

So you and I and the millions who do pay our taxes will get to pick up the tab for the BP oil spill.  The oil companies now make tens of billions each quarter, but the Tea Party thinks the government shouldn’t hold them responsible for the damage they do making those obscene profits.  At least that is what the Tea Party is saying.  In fact many of the Republicans that pushed through the limited liability of just $75 million are really Tea Baggers at heart.

Just think how great it will be when we get rid of all federal regulations and allow big corporations to do as they will?  Wow I can’t wait, how about you?
